Minor Officials

by Jim McNally on May 10, 2007

Minor Officials – minor officials provide important and necessary support functions during games under the direction of the referees. Five minor officials are required for each game including: Timekeeper; Scorekeeper; 30 Clock Timer; Home Penalty Bench Official; Visitor Penalty Bench Official.

Minor officials must perform their duties in a manner that is fair, objective and neutral. It is inappropriate for minor officials to cheer, yell or coach from the time box or penalty box area.

In order to provide the five volunteers necessary for each game, the home team must assign three (3) volunteers, and the visiting team must assign two (2). Any volunteer who is assigned to a minor official position but is unsure of their duties should seek clarification from the on-floor officials (referees) prior to the start of the game.

Players, coaches and spectators should treat minor officials with the same level of respect as referees. If minor officials overhear inappropriate, foul or abusive language they will report it to the referee and the player(s) coach(es) or spectator(s) will be penalized and or ejected from the game and/or facility as seen appropriate by the referee(s).
