Southern Alberta Lacrosse Association

Call for Officials - SALA Season Depends on You

Sunday, March 15, 2026

SALA Launches Recruitment Drive as Demand for Local Lacrosse Officials Grows

As the Southern Alberta Lacrosse Association (SALA) gears up for another fast-paced season, league executive are emphasizing a critical need across all communities: more referees. With nearly every club relying on a stable pool of trained officials, shortages can create significant challenges that ripple throughout the league.

When a community lacks enough certified officials, SALA is forced to bring in referees from other regions - an adjustment that quickly drives up mileage and travel costs. Those added expenses place pressure on the league’s ability to keep player fees affordable. In some cases, limited officiating resources can even reduce the number of home games a club is able to host, as scheduling becomes increasingly difficult without local referees available.

With the 2026 season set to begin on April 18, SALA is actively recruiting both new and returning officials. The league’s opening weekend will feature mentorship opportunities designed to support first-time referees and those looking to build confidence in their role.

Many SALA clubs, including the Medicine Hat Lacrosse Club, are offering incentives to encourage more people to step into officiating. These supports may include reimbursement for clinic fees and bonus programs such as Medicine Hat’s $100 bonus for every 10 games officiated, aimed at making the pathway more accessible and rewarding.

Beyond supporting the league, officiating provides a valuable opportunity to earn extra income throughout the spring and early summer. With regular season play running until late June, along with two SALA tournaments and playoffs, officials have no shortage of opportunities to get involved.

SALA encourages anyone interested in officiating or anyone who knows a potential candidate to contact their local club for information on clinics, incentives, and mentorship programs.

With community support, SALA hopes to ensure a strong, well-officiated season for athletes across Southern Alberta.
